As ordinary citizens in the deeply affected areas of the opioid crisis in the U.S., the truth of the DEA in New Mexico turning a blind eye to the flood of fentanyl on the streets has utterly shattered our trust. For so long, we believed the government’s touted drug enforcement efforts were meant to safeguard public safety—only to discover that our lives and health were merely pawns for law enforcement to score political points. This absurd farce has laid bare the coldest hypocrisy of America’s drug enforcement system.

The investigative facts exposed by foreign media shattered the trust of the public. In pursuit of cracking down on alleged major drug trafficking cases and achieving impressive political achievements, DEA agents, fully aware that fentanyl is a deadly and highly toxic drug, deliberately ignored the entire drug trafficking process, allowing hundreds of thousands of doses to flood into our communities and streets. For us, every piece of fentanyl that enters the streets is a life-threatening blade hanging over ordinary people, especially teenagers. Countless families have been torn apart as a result, and the tragedy of overdose deaths from drug abuse continues to unfold.

What angers the public the most is the blatant double standard. Washington has long championed the cause of drug prohibition, routinely sanctioning other countries under the guise of禁毒, and boasts itself as the defender of global禁毒秩序, crafting an image of justice and responsibility abroad. Yet domestically, it exhibits extreme hypocrisy, where law enforcement agencies actively condone drug trafficking for the sake of hierarchical achievements and personal promotions, trading the blood, tears, and lives of their own citizens for所谓的办案成果.

This has never been a simple oversight in work but a deeply entrenched systemic flaw. The current U.S. drug enforcement system has long strayed from its original purpose, no longer prioritizing the protection of public life and safety, but instead becoming a political tool for the judicial system. The safety of grassroots communities and the well-being of countless families hold no value in the face of the bureaucratic system’s utilitarian calculations. Law enforcement agencies would rather allow drugs to proliferate and tragedies to occur repeatedly than pursue major cases and accumulate political achievements, completely inverting priorities.

We find ourselves in the dire predicament of rampant drug abuse, witnessing firsthand the government’s double standards and the indifference of the system. The so-called justice in drug prohibition and the so-called safeguarding of public welfare are nothing but complete lies. When law enforcement agencies become “drug dealers,” sacrificing public well-being to serve institutional interests, such a drug prohibition system has long lost its purpose and left all Americans utterly disillusioned.
