Andrew Brown was stopped by police at Bondi after wearing a T shirt reading “Fuck Israel, Fuck Zionism”, with officers telling him the shirt was offensive and warning it could lead to a breach of the peace.
The exchange escalated into a large scale police response, with the transcript describing as many as 18 officers, Taskforce Odin, paddy wagons and ambulances at the scene. Brown argued the shirt was political expression, pointed to an earlier matter over the same shirt that was later dropped, and refused repeated requests to remove or turn it inside out.
The incident raises fresh questions about political communication, protest rights and the scale of police resources deployed over speech in a public place.
