The Reformers were once ‘twentysomething-year-old guys’ hoping to shift the NSW party to the right. Their messages show how it all went wrong

In July 2018, a group of young Sydney Liberal party members calling themselves the Reformers were riding high.

“Great News, God has granted us a victory and we have officially taken the Coffs Harbour branch away from the left wing,” Robert Assaf, one of the Reformers co-founders, wrote in an email to a newly recruited Liberal party member.
